I’m being a cliché again, writing at Starbucks–but I’ve found my favorite seat outside by the side doors of the shop, can you really blame me if I’ve found perfection already?
A few things have been changing for me. I’m still working towards the (vague) idea that I posted about two entries ago, but it’s such an undertaking of a process, I truly want to take my time with it. As for what I’ve been doing then: working a lot. I did take a week off recently for a vacation (hence the trip to Mt. Rainier), though. Right now I am in the process of looking over a few pieces I have written and trying to write more. So far, so good.
My friend Ariel turned me on to this article: August Deadlines: 12 Magazines and Contests with Deadlines This Month. There were a few that had already past but also some for the end of the month that sound promising. I just submitted a piece, I wrote while on the bus one day, to Qu. The perk was they didn’t charge through Submittable, which a lot of places do. I’m not entirely sure what the perk is there in charging either the service or the editors to read/take your work, but I’m glad Qu abstains for now, at least.
If you’re a writer looking for deadlines/somewhere to submit, it’s honestly got some good ones in that list. I’m currently looking at the other ones, deliberating if I have a piece ready to send there. I’m still working towards getting a piece in The Sun Magazine. I have a feeling I’m going to print out about 4 pieces here soon and send them off. I love the ease of submitting online, but because I have to occasionally pay for post for The Sun, I do find myself feeling a bit more traditional. There’s like an agonizing deliberation and wait with sliding the thick envelope in the mail.
As for another update, I did update my graphics design page, as well. I was commissioned through Tumblr (still counts) to make some headers for a girl in the Animal Crossing fandom, and I finally finished them and added my favorite two to that page. I’m getting there, guys.
If you need relaxation music, by the way, the artist that is penned as RelaxDaily on Soundcloud, has a slew of very relaxing music. I don’t know what gets your blood pumping when you’re writing–for me it changes depending on the subject and genre–but this has been working today. Also, I am able to drown out the people blowing smoke up my nose from not that far away. Seriously, there are laws that prohibiting smoking as close as they are to Starbucks’ doors right now. But whatever.
Is anyone out there already planning for NaNoWriMo? I know it’s still months away, but it hit me that it was getting closer, and I immediately began scrambling, hoping I could decide what I want to do. While writing the next great American novel is kind of the point for NaNoWriMo (or y’know, your region’s novel), I’m not really into writing my own novella. I’m fine just taking that word count and putting towards the works I’m already trying to crank out now.
So, those are my updates for now. Keep writing, folks.
