Shower thinking can do a lot of good. I always recommend people find their muse wherever they can, and then immediately find a way to write down whatever ideas they have.
There have been too many times that I’ve forgotten what I was thinking about in the shower or before bed and didn’t write it down. There’s nothing worse in writing than that–especially if you actually try to sit down later on and write whatever it was you wanted to write. It’s worse than writer’s block. Writer’s block you have to sift through until you can find your footing in writing again. But having the energy and muse to write but losing your train of thought… That’s just painful.
Anyway, it’s almost 3 a.m. here, I took a really late shower and now I’m just sitting in bed watching 30 Rock, thinking about the idea I just had ithat I managed to transform into a piece before it left my mind; I’ve submitted it to Hellogiggles.com in the same night, which I’m proud of myself for doing. Whether or not they take the piece, I did it.
I thought I would have more time this weekend to send in my submission to The Sun Magazine, but my next days off are Tuesday and Wednesday, so I’m banking on sending it off in a nice manila envelope then.
Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and submit pieces–even if you aren’t sure they’re worthy of an audience. And don’t shy away from those shower thoughts, either. Let your mind stray as shampoo runs down your face. Oh, and don’t forget to close your eyes–shampoo stings.
